Basic Principles behind the Dukan Diet

A diet is meant to be balanced to be able to provide correct nutrition and help goals such as fitness and healthy weight loss. The Dukan Diet is based on a high protein diet plan and claims to help people lose
considerable amounts of weight in a relatively small amount of time.

There are four phases with the diet and the final phase aims to create people up with healthy eating habits for a lifetime. While weight loss does occur, experts say any diet that severely restricts food groups is not advisable and may result in health problems.

Basic principles
Nutrition consists in three elements: carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Carbohydrates
They offer the necessary energy for our body’s to correctly function; about 50% of the daily energy requirements. They're present in foods like fruits, honey, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, lentils, and vegetables. Bananas, grapes and cherries would be the richest fruits in carbohydrates; same with wine and alcohol generally.

Fats
Fats are the enemies of slimming down and not good for your health, although a little amount is necessary. Too much fat results in the growth of cholesterol and triglycerides levels, that is dangerous for your health. Fats originate from two sources: animal and vegetable fats.

Proteins
They're vital for our survival. The richest proteins food  is meat, fish, crustaceans and eggs. If the body does not consume enough protein, it'll try to obtain them in the body’s reserves: mainly from the muscles, skin and bones. They're also harder to disintegrate and assimilate. For this reason they enhance the feeling of satiety and you're feeling full faster and for longer.
